Weak Stove Flame — Why and How to Fix It

A healthy flame should be blue and strong. A weak, yellow, or orange flame not only slows cooking — it also produces more carbon monoxide and can be hazardous.

Symptoms

If you notice one or more of these symptoms, this page is for you:

  • Short or weak flame
  • Orange or yellow flame (not blue)
  • Cooking takes longer than normal
  • Flame flickers and goes out
  • Strange noise from the burner

The most common causes

1

Blocked burner ports (most common)

Grease and food buildup block the gas ports.

2

Low gas pressure

Cylinder nearly empty, weak or faulty regulator, or low natural-gas pressure.

3

Unbalanced air/gas ratio

The burner needs a specific amount of air to burn blue. Wrong air adjustment produces an orange flame.

4

Clogged gas jet

The jet is the orifice through which gas reaches the burner. If clogged, the flame is weak.

5

Grease buildup inside internal gas pipes

Rare, but happens in older stoves.

Solutions

Safe DIY solutions

Deep-clean the burner

  1. 1 Remove the burner cap + head
  2. 2 Soak in warm water + white vinegar for 30 minutes
  3. 3 Clear the ports with a needle or old toothbrush
  4. 4 Dry completely before reassembly

Change the cylinder

  1. 1 If the cylinder is nearly empty, swap it — this often resolves the issue
