Stove Won't Ignite — Complete Causes and Solutions

A stove that won't ignite is one of the most common faults we handle daily. The cause is usually simple and fixed in 15-30 minutes, but you need to identify the real cause before attempting a DIY fix.

Symptoms

If you notice one or more of these symptoms, this page is for you:

  • The stove won't light when you turn the knob
  • Auto-ignition sparks but the burner does not light
  • Gas smell before the burner lights (knob turned, no flame)
  • Only one burner fails to light, the rest work
  • The whole stove suddenly stops igniting

The most common causes

1

Blocked burner ports (most common)

Grease and food buildup block the gas ports in the burner. The fix: a deep clean. This accounts for around 60% of cases.

2

Faulty auto-ignition

The ignition sensor or its electrical circuit has failed.

3

Faulty safety sensor (thermocouple)

The sensor shuts off gas automatically if it detects no flame. If faulty, it shuts off gas even while the burner is lit.

4

Low gas pressure

A weak regulator, a nearly-empty cylinder, or low natural-gas pressure.

5

Blocked or kinked gas hose

The hose between the cylinder and the stove is kinked or blocked.

6

Faulty burner knob

The knob turns without actually opening the gas.

Solutions

Safe DIY solutions you can try

Clean the burner

  1. 1 Turn off the stove and disconnect the cylinder
  2. 2 Remove the burner (cap + head)
  3. 3 Soak it in warm soapy water
  4. 4 Clear the gas ports with a thin needle
  5. 5 Dry completely and reassemble

Check the cylinder and regulator

  1. 1 Shake the cylinder — if light, it is nearly empty
  2. 2 Inspect the regulator for visible rust or damage

Check the hose

  1. 1 Look for kinks or bends
  2. 2 If the hose is over 3 years old, replace it

Professional-only fixes (do not attempt yourself)

  • Repair or replace the safety sensor (thermocouple)
  • Repair the auto-ignition circuit
  • Replace the knobs
  • Address gas leaks
  • Any work inside the stove
