What to Do If You Smell Gas in the Kitchen

Immediate safety steps for gas smell and what you must never do before a technician arrives.

By FixStove Team

Gas smell is not a normal fault. The first minute matters for reducing risk before any inspection.

First steps

Shut off the gas source immediately, open windows, and leave the space if the smell is strong. Never search for a leak with a lighter or match.

  • Close the valve
  • Ventilate
  • Do not switch electricity
  • Call emergency service

Things to avoid

Do not press electrical switches, do not use a phone beside the smell source, and do not remove the hose or regulator when the smell is strong.

After the technician arrives

The technician checks the hose, regulator, valves, and connections, then tests for leaks before the appliance is used again.

Quick checklist

  • Gas closed
  • Windows open
  • No electrical switching
  • Emergency call made
